Best Baby Supplies for the Entire First Year

These baby essentials are used all through the first year.

Baby vitamin D drops

However you feed your baby is beautiful. This recommendation is for breastfeeding. Breast milk alone may not provide sufficient vitamin D for babies, especially if the mother's levels are low. Therefore, it is recommended by most healthcare providers that breastfed babies be given vitamin D supplements. Why is vitamin D important for infants' growth and development? Getting enough vitamin D is important for babies as it plays a crucial role in their growth and development. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus, which are vital for the development of strong bones and teeth. It assists in the mineralization process, ensuring that bones grow properly and reducing the risk of rickets, a condition that causes weak and soft bones. Vitamin D is also involved in regulating the immune system and promoting a healthy immune response. Sufficient vitamin D levels can help reduce the risk of infections, including respiratory infections and certain autoimmune diseases. Studies suggest that vitamin D may play a role in brain development and function. It is believed to affect the production of neurotransmitters and influence various aspects of cognitive function and behavior in infants. Adequate vitamin D levels are also associated with improved muscle strength and coordination in infants. It helps maintain healthy muscle function, allowing babies to reach developmental milestones such as sitting, crawling, and walking.

Keep the diaper bag equipped with everything you need to quickly grab and go. This backpack is large enough for all your diaper bag essentials plus room for your breast pump supplies if needed. The diaper changing kit has a removable changing pad built-in and pockets for all your diaper changing basics such as diapers, wipes, balm, a change of clothes, and more.We use both the backpack and diaper kit everyday and they worked great for traveling to Hawaii and back. See essential diaper bag supplies here.

#3 Carrier

Keep your baby close and happy while leaving your hands free. Baby carriers are great at home and on-the-go without lugging around a stroller. Infants love the warm, secure, gentle bouncing while strapped in, just like they are back in the womb. There are many different types of baby carriers on the market so you may need to try a few to see what you and baby like best. Some offer flexibility of positions to grow with your baby. Newborns will need to be strapped to your front and facing you, but as baby grows they might enjoy facing out to see what's happening around them. When your child gets heavier wearing them on your back will be more comfortable. Ensure the carrier you choose is comfortable for you and your baby.

Mom and baby using Boppy pillow to breastfeed

Beloved by thousands of parents and babies everywhere, the Boppy Pillow has rave reviews; 4.8/5 with nearly 90% of customers giving it 5 stars on Amazon. The Poppy Pillow is a multi-purpose support pillow and grows with your baby. Use it in infancy as a nursing pillow, then use it later as a sitting and tummy time support pillow. The cover is removable and machine washable for easy care.

This bottle rack is one of the most economical options, but I think it's the best option. The slanted design allows water to drain into your sink (or a drying pad underneath). This prevents water buildup and mildew or mold from forming. The removable racks and smooth surface also makes cleaning it fast and easy. It's large enough for all your bottles and pumping parts, but compact enough to save on counter space. The bottle brush that comes with the drying rack is not the greatest so I recommend picking up a better one, like this bottle brush with replaceable head and a hidden nipple brush inside the durable stainless steel handle.

When your baby gets their first cold and snotty congestion strikes, the Nose Frida snot sucker has way better suction and is more hygienic than those gross hospital bulbs. The included saline spray softens snot and boogers, making it easy to suck out. The 3-in-1 picker is great for picking boogies out of baby's tiny nostrils as well as other useful care tools.

Haakaa Electric Nail Care Set

This electric nail file comes with a new file pad for every few months as your baby's nails harden. It takes some finesse to find the right pressure for filing the nail, but it's so much safer and less scary than nail clippers. Use it while baby is sleeping to make an easier job of it.

Mustela Gentle Baby Hair and Body Wash is gentle on baby's skin, tough on cradle cap, and smells amazing. You'll be inhaling your baby's head for days after washing it with this. Apply lotion to your infant's skin after bath time to moisturize. This tube of Cetaphil Baby Lotion has lasted us through the entire first year with weekly baths.

From Breast to bottle and back. Lansinoh bottles with NaturalWave Nipples are clinically proven to reduce nipple confusion

Whether you breastfeed or formula feed, you'll need some bottles so your partner or someone else can help feed your baby and give mom a break. Lansinoh bottles in particular are recommended for babies that need to transition from breast to bottle or alternate back and forth. These bottles helped our baby go back and forth between bottles and boob when Kailey struggled with other bottles. I pumped during the day while working and breastfeed in the evening.

Grownsy double bottle warmer

This bottle warmer can fit most bottle sizes and has settings for fast warming, constant warming, milk warming, and food heating. The double bottle capacity is great if you have twins or two bottle feeding kiddos in the home, or want to warm up a bottle for now and later. It works great for our nanny with a child around the same age as Kailey, she is able to warm both their bottles at the same time.

Contain those poopy diapers and the smell with a diaper pail. We chose the Dekor Plus diaper pail because it's bigger than others. The continuous trash bag can be cut and taken out at any time without wasting garbage bags. There is also a Dekor cloth bag option for cloth diapers.

Baby essentials for newborns 0-3 months

These baby supplies are essentials for the first few months after bringing your little bundle of joy home.

GRACO SnugFit 35 DLX Infant Car Seat Baby Car Seat

This is required to take your baby home from the hospital! Make sure to install it well before your due date to be ready. You can go to your local fire station if you need help safely installing it. The car seat should be strapped down tight enough that it does not move more than an inch side-to-side when jostled. You'll want an infant car seat that can be removed and used as a carrier and rocker in the beginning. If you have more than one family car, you can save time and money (vs buying a second car seat) by getting a compatible second base for your infant car seat for fast and easy car switching.

Graco pack and play with bassinet

You need somewhere safe for your infant to sleep. It's recommended that your baby has a separate bed within the same room as you for the first few months. That's where the bassinet comes into play. Many parents opt for a bassinet next to their bed until their baby outgrows it and is moved to the crib. We solved two needs simultaneously by using a Pack n Play as both the bassinet and crib, which also saved us money and space in our small nursery. We added a thicker mattress to the Pack n Play for added comfort. Around six months, about the time she was outgrowing the Pack n Play, we transitioned to a floor bed.

Simple Joys by Carter's Unisex Babies' Cotton Footed Pajamas, Pack of 3

The only clothing you need in the first few months. The zippers make diaper changes a breeze! Don't waste your time with buttons. I recommend getting some in every size through 9 months.

SwaddleMe Swaddles with Easy Change Zipper, 3 pack

Forget the folding technique, these swaddles are so quick and easy with hook and loop closures and a zipper on the bottom for fast diaper changes.

Frida Baby DermaFrida The 3-Step Cradle Cap System with Scalp Spray and Scalp Mask

The Frida Baby Cradle Cap System really works to rid your newborn of cradle cap! Use the sponge to wet their head and apply the scalp mask, next gently scrub-a-dub-dub with the brush side and lift and remove large flakes with the comb, then rinse, pat dry and apply the leave-in spray. This worked wonders for Kailey's cradle cap. Read through the 80% 5-star reviews on Amazon, and see why parents love this kit. Around 6 months of age cradle cap usually goes away on its own, but until then this regimen will keep it at bay.

Both of these items are fantastic for soothing a fussy baby and there are pros and cons to each.

This swing was amazing to rock Kailey back to sleep in the middle of the night when we were exhausted. There are variable speeds of vibration and swinging, and the seat can be turned if your baby prefers rocking side-to-side or swinging forward and back. The swing is a higher price point and takes a good bit of space in a small nursery but it does all the work for you; vibrating, swinging and playing music.

A bouncer was a game changer when we discovered the motion stopped her newborn crying. This one vibrates (babies love vibration), and is compact and easily portable. We even took the bouncer to a sit-down restaurant and were able to enjoy a nice meal after rocking Kailey to sleep at the table!

There is a lot of spit up the first few months so it's a great idea to have a bunch of burp rags at the ready! These 100% Cotton Muslin burp cloths are soft and absorbent.

Baby essentials for 3-6 months

These baby supplies are essentials for around three to six months age.

When your baby starts teething the drooling starts and does not stop until they get all their teeth, which could be up to or past one year. Muslim bibs are great to catch the drool while still being soft on skin, and it's so much easier to change the bib than a shirt or onesie. Opt for bibs with side buttons so they don't get in the way of napping.

Speaking of teething, when those teeth start erupting, your baby is going to want to chew on a teether all the time. Our baby gnawed on several like a dog with a bone starting around 3 months. The Frida Baby Not-Too-Cold-To-Hold Frozen Silicone Teether is fantastic to have at home because you can freeze the teether inserts for added soothing power while keeping the handles at room temperature so your infant's hands don't get cold while holding it. You'll also want some other teethers that you can take on the go like this cute elephant teether.

Once your baby is done swaddling, upgrade to a merino sleep sack. These are no ordinary sleep sacks, made of merino wool with amazing breathable, temperature regulating, moisture wicking, and odor fighting properties, your little one will be cozy and comfortable all night long. These are high quality, last a long time, and you can often find them secondhand if buying new is outside your budget. You can get a sleep sack with or without feet. I prefer the option with feet holes so they can continue using it once mobile. We also love our Woolino merino wool toddler blanket.

A rattle serves as a versatile toy for babies, offering a multisensory experience that promotes cognitive, physical, and emotional development. Its engaging features make it an essential tool for stimulating various aspects of a baby's growth and providing them with valuable learning opportunities. This cozy bunny rattle comforts baby with long suckable ears and soft fuzzy fabric, a a wonderful rattle noise when shaken.

We went on our first trip to Hawaii when Kailey was 4 months old. She did not care for the long car rides around the island but a rattle was the one thing that distracted her enough to stop the crying.

When your baby starts showing interest in solid foods, it's time to get a high chair. Every baby is unique so watch for their cues, like watching intently as you eat or reaching for your food. High chairs come in different shapes and styles, some are traditional stand-a-lone chairs, and others are strapped to your dining chair. Your baby should be in a high chair until they can sit up on their own, then you can consider a booster seat if you prefer. Consider your dining room space, baby's development stage, and style preferences before purchase. Also look for secondhand if you are less picky about this purchase and want to save money. You might even be lucky enough to find a neighbor giving away their high chair for free.

Baby essentials for 6-9 months

These baby supplies are essentials for around six to nine months age. There are fewer purchases in this time frame, but a couple are at a higher price point.

Around the time baby becomes too heavy to carry in your infant car seat is about time to switch to a convertible car seat to use through toddlerhood (check your car seat for exact weight limit). At this point you'll still want them facing backwards but this convertible car seat will be for the long haul so be sure to spend the time researching to get one you like. We like the Baby Trend Cover Me 4-in-1 Convertible Car Seat for the built-in sun shade and two cup holders for snacks and a drink.

The first few months you can get away with carrying your infant in a baby carrier or in the infant car seat for short distances, but by 6 months they'll be getting a bit heavy to carry around so it's time to find a stroller. Strollers come in all shapes and sizes so shop around and consider the features that are most important for your family. This is a big ticket item so definitely put it on the registry or see if you can find one second hand. We were grateful a friend gave us a B.O.B. all terrain jogging stroller, which works great for my husband's runs and we love using it for family walks with our dog to the park.

One or both. Whichever you choose, it will be great for building baby's leg strength in preparation for walking! Your baby will love to bounce or cruise around once they get the hang of it.

Once those teeth start coming in, it's time to start brushing them. It's a good habit you want to start practicing early and often so your child gets used to it. Kailey hated brushing her teeth until she received this cool light electric toothbrush! Now... she tolerates it, but that's all I can ask for.

Baby essentials for 9-12 months

These baby supplies are essentials for around nine months to one year old.

#28 Toddler Bed or Floor Bed

If you haven't already transitioned from a crib to a toddler bed or floor bed, you'll want to do so before your child is able to climb out of the crib to prevent injuries from falling. We opted for a floor bed, and transitioned a bit earlier than this. Each child is different so watch their cues to tell you when it's time.

#29 Toddler shoes

There's really no point in buying shoes before the kid can walk. Once they take their first steps, it's time to get some comfortable and sturdy shoes or boots for your little walker. They'll grow out of them quick enough that you shouldn't spend too much or buy too many pairs though. Look for secondhand shoes at this age because you'll likely find some that look almost new at Goodwill. Unlikely you'll be so lucky once they hit toddlerhood when kids wear shoes out much quicker so take advantage now and save some money. Cat & Jack shoes at Target are cute, durable, and affordable.

This last suggestion is a fun one just because I just had to end on an even 30 in my list, but also because Build-A-Bear has a fantastic discount during the month of your kid's birthday. Sign up for an account on their website, fill in your child's birthday, and go into a store anytime during the month of your child's birthday to receive a bear for the price of their age. That means if you go for their first birthday, it's $1! Keep in mind the bear is a specific birthday bear they specify each year, and that price does not include any accessories you or your child may want such as a t-shirt for the bear. This is a fun little activity you can do with your toddler for their birthday. You can watch them fill the bear with stuffing and your child can even pick out a heart to sew into the bear. I did this with my daughter for her first birthday and that bear has been her FAVORITE toy ever since. She sleeps with Bear every night and cuddles Bear close when she feels upset.
